Can You Wash a Quilt With Photos On It?

Are you afraid to use your photo quilt like a quilt? You don’t have to be afraid anymore.

One of the most common questions we hear is, “Can you wash a quilt with photos on it?” The good news is yes! A professionally printed photo quilt is made to be loved—not just admired. Whether you’ve created a treasured memory quilt filled with family photos, a personalized baby quilt, or a keepsake celebrating a special milestone, you should be able to enjoy it for years to come with proper care.

The answer, however, starts long before your quilt ever reaches the washing machine. It begins with how your photos were printed on the fabric and who printed them. Not all printing methods, fabrics, or printing companies are created equal. Choosing a professional printer who understands both fabric printing and quilting makes a huge difference in how your photo quilt performs over time.

At Photo Quilt Blocks, we use sublimation printing, a process that permanently bonds your image into carefully tested and selected fabric rather than leaving it sitting on the surface. During the printing process, the ink is transformed into a gas that penetrates the polyester fibers, becoming part of the fabric itself. Because the image is embedded within the fibers instead of resting on top, the finished photo remains soft to the touch and won’t crack, peel, or flake over time. The result is a vibrant, durable photo quilt block that’s designed to withstand years of quilting, cuddling, washing, and sharing with the people you love.

Here are five simple tips to help keep your photo quilt looking beautiful while protecting the memories stitched into every block.

Step 1: Choose a Professional Photo Fabric Printer

The single biggest factor in whether you can safely wash a photo quilt is how the photos were printed in the first place. Unfortunately, not every company that prints photos on fabric uses materials or printing methods that are designed for quilts.

When shopping for photo quilt blocks, look beyond price. Ask questions about the printing process, the fabric being used, and whether the finished product is intended to be quilted and washed. A company that understands quilting knows that your printed blocks need to stand up to piecing, pressing, quilting, and years of everyday use.

At Photo Quilt Blocks, we’ve spent years testing fabrics and refining our process to find materials that sew beautifully and hold up over time. We use sublimation printing because the image becomes part of the fabric fibers instead of sitting on the surface. That means your photos stay soft, vibrant, and durable without cracking or peeling.

A quality photo quilt should become a treasured family heirloom—not something you’re afraid to wash. Choosing an experienced printer from the beginning gives you confidence that your quilt can be enjoyed, snuggled, displayed, and passed down for generations.

Step 2: Wash Your Photo Quilt on a Gentle Cycle

When it’s time to clean your photo quilt, use your washing machine’s gentle or delicate cycle.

For the best results:

  • Wash in cold water.
  • Use a mild detergent.
  • Avoid bleach or harsh stain removers.
  • Avoid fabric softeners.
  • Wash with similar colors.

These simple steps help protect both the fabric and your precious photo memories.

Step 3: Take Care When Drying Your Quilt

High heat is the enemy of any quilt. To keep your memory quilt looking its best:

  • Tumble dry on low heat. Remove promptly when dry.
  • You can even opt to tumble dry the quilt for about 15 minutes, then lay flat to dry the remainder of the way.
  • Or not tumble dry the quilt at all and lay the quilt flat to air dry for extra protection.

Proper drying helps prevent unnecessary wear while keeping the quilt soft and beautiful.

Step 4: Handle Stains as Soon as Possible

Life happens—especially if your quilt is well-loved by kids or grandchildren.

If spills occur:

  • Blot the stain instead of rubbing.
  • Use a gentle fabric-safe stain remover.
  • I have found carbonated soda water to work well at getting many stains out of many surfaces!
  • Test any cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first.

Quick attention to stains helps preserve both the fabric and the printed photographs.

Step 5: Store Your Quilt Properly

Even when your quilt isn’t being used, proper storage makes a difference.

Store your photo quilt:

  • In a cool, dry location.
  • Folded loosely to reduce permanent creases.
  • Roll your quilt around a pool noodle or fabric tube for storage.  They work great!
  • Away from direct sunlight to prevent fading over time. This one is very important!

If possible, take the quilt out occasionally and refold it in a different direction to reduce stress on the same fold lines.
